Spring 2016 New Brothers

Hello Brothers,

I hope your summers are off to a great start. I wanted to share some information about our newest pledge class. I had the privilege of leading these young bloods into the fraternity; a great group of guys for sure.

9/20/16 - Greek Life Task Force

The House Corporation Board wants to call your attention to the overall state of Greek Life at Penn State.  In March 2015, a horrific story about hazing and other deplorable behavior came on to the national press.  Kappa Delta Rho was at the center of the scandal, which resulted in their closure.  Last summer University President Barron formed a Fraternity and Sorority Life Task Force.  We were unsuccessful in getting one of our own on the task force, however, Brother Ted Brown ’68, who is a Board Trustee is our voice in this matter.  Also, Brothers Lou Prato and Vince Turiano represented us at a roundtable discussion in March and they were able to provide valuable insight to the Task Force discussion. Today’s major issues facing active members include:  a leadership vacuum, caused by high frequency of study abroad for Juniors and Seniors, leaving fraternities to be run by 19 year olds;  sororities forced to accept anyone who wants to join; it is “social suicide” if sororities don’t have 2 or 3 socials every week; cleaning by pledges in a fraternity is considered hazing and thus prohibited;  Neighborhood Watch groups looking for any rule violation; 7am to midnight class schedules, making it nearly impossible to eat meals together, thus negating a key component of fraternity life from the 1990’s and prior.  I urge you to read the documents on the brothers portal on this topic.

8/3/15 - Alleyway Entrance Extended

We're pleased to inform you that the borough is taking steps to improve the alleyway entrance from Prospect Avenue that is adjacent to our property.  The borough is extending the curb of the alleyway to support the heavy vehicle traffic on the road and repaving the alleyway for the wear and tear that has impacted it during these past few years.

7/31/15 - New WIFI Infrastructure Installed

Thanks to a generous grant from the Theta Delta Chi Educational Foundation, equipment donations from Brother Scott Thompson and Ian Morris and the services of Brother Ian Morris and Bill Rottschaefer, the charge house now has a new business class internet system installed for all residents.  The new internet system includes WIFI access in all areas of the charge house and hardline wiring for each of the brothers' rooms.

7/18/15 - Summer Extra #11

Summer Extra #11 was well attended this year.  In total, we had approximately 60 brothers in attendance for the weekend's events.  Of all the pledge classes, the class of Spring 1986 had the highest level of attendance.  During the poker match, an appetizers break was offered up for everyone, and Brother Dang finally got to treat everyone to rum raisin ice cream.   It seems appropriate that Brother Cuong Dang ended up the winner of this year's tourney.

7/18/15 - Summer Extra Work Weekend

Thanks to Brother Dan Richards and Josh Baer for organizing the first ever Summer Extra Work Weekend.  Together with a crew that consisted of Brothers Gary Bodkin, Mike Blake, Oscar Baumert, Eric Schiller, Tod Stenger, Scott Munroe and Bill Rottschafer, the crew painted the party room, pine room and basement hallways. Along with the repairs to the benches in the pine room and the repair and refinishing of the basement floor, the basement is all set for this upcoming fall.  Thanks everyone for making this first work weekend a success.  Check out the pictures below of the work both in progress as well as the final result.

6/13/15 - Sigma Phi Sigma Reunion

We had a strong turn out at this year's Sigma Phi Sigma Reunion Weekend.  We had roughly 50 or so Theta Delts from eras that ranged from the 1950s to today attend the event.  On Friday evening we hosted brothers and their families at the charge house for cocktails and appetizers.  On Saturday, a banquet was held to honor the founding members of our charge.

6/10/15 - Floors Refinished

The charge house floors were refinished ahead of the Sigma Phi Sigma Reunion.  The Trophy Case was also cleaned for the weekend.  Check out the results below:

4/11/15 - Theta Delt Parents Weekend

The charge held a great Parents Weekend celebration.  The event was well attended and provided the actives a great opportunity to show their parents, friends and alums all the work they've done during the past school year.

4/11/15 - Brother of the Year: Tyler S.. Hooven '15

Congratulations to Brother Tyler S.. Hooven for being selected as Brother of the Year by the active undergraduate membership.  Brother Hooven was awarded this honor for his service and support of our brotherhood.  The award ceremony was held during the Spring 2015 Parents Weekend held at our house on April 11th.

4/10/15 - Brother Don "Duke" Hopper'78 dancing in THON

Brother Don “Duke” Hopper ’78 has asked for any assistance our brotherhood could provide in support of a Mini-Thon that he and his students are undertaking.

Don, who is a high school teacher, is dancing in part of Eastern York High School’s Mini-Thon on April 24. The donations go towards the Four Diamonds Foundation. Don noted that the last time he danced was back in 1975, so after 40 years he is dusty off his sneakers to support the cause again.  To push the cause, Don gave us a picture of him from back in 1975 as a dancer.

To read more about what Don is doing, see a nice picture of him from his time as a dancer in 1975 and donate to his efforts, go to this link:

Don was able to raise $1,125 for the event and prove he still had what it takes to represent Penn State, Theta Delt and Thon well.  Congrats to Don!!!

3/17/15 - New Website Launched!!!

Welcome to the newly enhanced SigmaTriton.org website.  Thanks to Brothers Ian Morris, Dave "Mac" Stragand, Kyle Hockman and Bill Rottschaefer for pulling the site together.

2/4/15 - THON Less Than a Month Away!!!

THON is less than a month away!!! To kick off the final few weeks before the event, we are running the first ever TDX online THON donation drive during this upcoming weekend (February 7th to 9th).

During the weekend, we ask that you consider donating directly to THON via the House THON page: TDXTHON.COM. When you enter in your donation, please add “TDX” next to your name. For example, Brother John Smith’s donation would have his last name entered in as SmithTDX. We will attempt to report out the results from the weekend leveraging this information.

For brothers that wish to send a check, please contact me, Matt Bastian (12matbas@gmail.com) for specific instructions on how to do so. Donations received will be credited to the efforts of Sigma Triton Theta Delta Chi and more importantly will assist our THON families.

Don’t forget to check if your employer offers matching contributions. THON would typically qualify to receive matching funds in these circumstances. It is another way of increasing the impact of your donation towards fighting childhood cancer.

In regard to the THON 2015 weekend, we are sponsoring four dancer groups and are once again partnering with the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi for the event. Over the past five years, our two combined organizations have raised nearly $600,000 in THON contributions and finished in the Top Ten List for Greek Organizations. Theta Delta Chi and Alpha Delta Pi have a pretty good track record so far.

Sigma Triton's achievements here are due to the work of both us, Actives, as well as the support of you, our esteemed Alumni. So, if you are able to, please stop by during THON weekend on February 20 through 22 to cheer on our dancers!!!

We thank you for your support of THON this year and in years past. You’ve made a real impact in the fight against childhood cancer. As Sigma Tritons and Penn Staters, we are making a difference here. For the Kids!!!

1/30/15 - State College Football Rentals

Brothers and Friends of TDX Sigma Triton,

As a fellow alumni, I realize that getting back up to State College for a football or event weekend is difficult. It does not help that hotels are so expensive for these weekends.

I wanted to make you aware of another housing option for these weekends. You can now rent out a home for these weekend via https://statecollegefootballrentals.com/

Not a bad option to get a group of your pledge brothers and peers from your time in the house under one roof for a weekend. When you factor in the cost per person, you are looking at less than $200 for the weekend, which is a good deal.

So, the places are available for Blue / White Weekend. Why not round up a few of your pledge brothers and get a place for the weekend?

10/31/14 - Happy Founder's Day Everyone...TDX turns 167 today!!!

Message from Executive Director of TDX, Dr. Richard Wood, Gamma Triton ‘73:

"October 31, 1847, six men at Union College joined together and formed into a Fraternity, a “. . . friendship founded on mutual esteem and dependence.” Today, we honor their vision and celebrate the continued success of our esteemed organization. We are better men because of Theta Delta Chi and we all hold dear the friendships we have made under her banner of black, white and blue. I am proud to join with other Theta Delts around the world in raising a glass and toasting “the Old Lady” in celebration of our amazing brotherhood and in remembrance of those in Omega."
