The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionatey known as THON, is a yearlong effort to raise funds for the fight against perdiatric cancer. Since 1977, THON has raised more than $127 million for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Four Diamonds picks up where insurance leaves off, enabling families to solely focus on care for their child. Assistance from Four Diamonds ensures counselors, social workers, therapists and other specialists are available to provide comphrehensive care in a family-focused atmosphere.
Since its inception, THON has been entirely student-run. THON is the collective efforts of over 15,000 students and has become one of Penn State's greatest traditions. In 2015, THON raised more than $13 million and was able to donate 96% of funds raised directly to the Four Diamonds.
The brothers of Theta Delta Chi are active participants in THON. Theta Delta Chi and its partner sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, participate in THON every year. From canning trips to holding THON committe and captain positions, Theta Delts have made a positive mark on the event. This past year, with the help of Alpha Delta Pi, we raised over $111,000. With this total, we were ranked once again in the Top Ten Greek Organizations for fundraising.
Importantly, we are participants in THON for the kids. While we talk about how much we've raised, we do this out of pride in what these contributions go towards. Theta Delta Chi has adopted multiple THON families, who benefit directly from our efforts. The money we've raised has assisted children, such as Owen Marsico and Gavin Howe obtain their treatments for cancer.
For THON 2016, we sponsored 4 dancer pairs for the event. THON 2017 will be held on February 17th to the 19th at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center. If you are in the State College area during this time, please stop out to cheer on our dancers and support this great cause. For the Kids!!!
